Installation paths

Pick the instructions that match your platform.

Each path includes a verification step so you can tell whether the problem is the manager, the game path, or a mod.

01

Windows first install

  1. Download the setup executable from the release files or the Thunderstore ZIP.
  2. Install r2modman in a normal application location, not inside the game folder.
  3. Choose a game and confirm Steam/game paths under Settings → Locations.
  4. Create a profile, install essential packages and dependencies from Online.
  5. Press Start modded. Launch via Steam when you want vanilla.
02

Linux desktop

  1. Use AppImage, deb, rpm, pacman or tar.gz. Never use the Windows `.exe`.
  2. For AppImage, run chmod +x r2modman-3.2.19.AppImage.
  3. If Electron sandboxing blocks launch, try --no-sandbox.
  4. For Proton games, create a blank .forceproton file if the manager misdetects the platform.
  5. Back up any Steam appmanifest before editing platform overrides.
03

Steam Deck and Flatpak

  1. In Desktop Mode, run the Flatpak setup script from the downloaded package.
  2. Add r2modman to Steam if you want to launch it in Game Mode.
  3. Check Flatpak permissions for the game directory and Steam library.
  4. Keep a clean profile for testing before importing a larger modpack.
  5. Use the project Wiki for Proton-specific recovery steps.

Trust and limits

The manager and its mods have different trust boundaries.

r2modman is MIT-licensed, but each third-party mod has its own author, code, permissions, license, and compatibility risk. Keep backups, avoid unknown DLLs, and check your game’s anti-cheat and terms before modding.

Release context

Use an older build only for a documented reason.

Version history is useful when a game or modpack pins a release. Older builds should be tied to a specific compatibility need.

The release archive keeps the version history. Older installers can stop working after game updates, so use them only when a game community documents a compatibility need.
